Studies in Musicology
Section 44149
- Note:
Topic: Soundscapes and Music Places
Course description: As musicians, we have come to understand our art form and personal craft through the lens of our training, societal conceptions, and layers of history leading up to our current moment. We "stand on the shoulders of giants" and educate ourselves in the history of our genre and instrument, while pushing boundaries into the future. Yet we often fail to reflect on the role of music in the greater sonic world. In this class, we will engage with sonic markers as tokens of cultural setting based in time, space, context and mediation. Viewed through the academic lenses of anthropology, musicology, history, ethnomusicology, media studies and architecture, the course will explore aural culture and meaning in both practice and setting, and will foster a deep ongoing engagement with and understanding of sound and sonic space. - Session Dates (session code 001)
