Course description: This course will examine the life and works of the composer Gustav Mahler (1860-1911). By focusing on his symphonies--a different one each week--well study his stylistic development, identifying its precursors and noting his influence on later composers. Because of the extraordinary length of Mahlers works, plan for extensive listening assignments.
