Course description: This course will trace the history of lyric and narrative love songs from the late Middle Ages through Renaissance and into the early 19th-century. The class will focus the intimate links between song, dance, and sacred music and their influence on music of later periods. Students will also be invited to explore similar themes in more recent music from the 18th century through modern popular genres.
