Community Engagement

Section 64515

  • Note: Through projects with community partners, this special topics course affords students an opportunity to improve their writing and critical reasoning skills experientially and personally. In this course, students engage diverse communities, ethically address social needs, and learn from the communities that surround and intersect with USC. Beyond the standard work-load for a WRIT 150 course, students will also attend trainings and complete service hours with with one of several, diverse, approved partnerships; students will engage in collaborative work that requires them to interrogate assumptions about places and identities, and explore the complexities of social issues such as homelessness, education, and criminal justice, among others. Using experiences with community partners and assigned texts as an anchor, students will engage in the writing and revision processes, craft complex arguments, and imagine new possibilities for local communities; this writing will take the form of multiple writing projects and a semester-long project with a community partner.
