Introductory survey of art and architecture of Christianity from 300-1300; biblical themes and classical traditions; cultural and historical analysis of medieval art.

Painting, sculpture and architecture in 17th century Europe, north and south. Recommended preparation: AHIS 121

(Paris semester only). Exploration of the main movements of late 19th and early 20th century French art using the resources of Parisian museums and monuments. Visits to Paris museums are an integral part of the coursework. Recommended preparation: familiarity with modern European history

An examination of European modern art and design, focusing on industrialization, urbanism, primitivisim, colonialism, and their relations to the arts.

Explores key moments in the history of photography from its invention to the present. Issues include modernity and mass culture; photography as a fine art; technologies of vision.
